CBD is the acronym for a compound called cannabidiol which is found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. There is evidence that the first spun fibers in history about 10,000 years ago were part of the cannabis plant. Cannabis is probably most well-known for its intoxicating effect and has been called marijuana in recent times. For most of our recorded history cannabis has been used for a variety of purposes, including the manufacture of clothing, rope, paper, and many other similar items. So much so that the word canvas comes from the word cannabis as it was used to make sails during the Age of Sailing. Even the Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper!

What is the Right Dosage?

This can be a tricky question to answer definitively and depends on many factors such as body weight and tolerance. Generally, the higher your body weight the more CBD you will have to take to feel the desired effects. The same goes for tolerance levels. If you are the kind of person that one aspirin has the desired effect, then a small amount of CBD may be the ticket. On the other hand, if you are the kind of person who needs many aspirins just the feel the effects, then your tolerance may be higher, and more CBD will be needed for the desired effect. Another factor that goes into consideration is the overall health of your body and the endocannabinoid system in general. If you are a healthy person then less will be needed than a person who is on the lower side of the health spectrum. Finally, the reason for taking CBD in the first place can be a major role in how much needs to be taken. If taking CBD for general supplementation like a multivitamin or mild anxiety you would take less than someone who is using it to fight cancer or a serious condition such as epilepsy.

Dosing Methodologies​

There are three main dosing methodologies and each one can be effective for different types of relief sought after. Taking CBD is not an exact science and can take some experimentation to find the best dose that works for you. As a general rule, it is best to start small and work your way up while assessing how your body reacts and most importantly how it makes you feel. The three main methodologies are as follows.

  • Micro Dosing – Is taking between one milligram and 20 milligrams per day. This can be a great place to start for newer users or to gauge your sensitivity to CBD, especially if you have a low tolerance when it comes to other things or if you have very low body weight. Micro dosing is also great if you are just looking to take CBD like a multivitamin or as a regular supplement. Many people find that it can be effective for ailments such as sleep, digestive issues, nausea, headache, mood, stress, anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
  • Standard Dosing – This can be anywhere from 10 milligrams to 100 milligrams a day. Some will take the full dose at once while others will split it up into multiple doses over the day. Splitting it up can sometimes be effective in reducing any negative side effects from the CBD. Standard dosing has been shown to help out ailments such as pain, menopause, arthritis, fibromyalgia, inflammation, autoimmune diseases, Lyme disease, anxiety, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, autism, and multiple sclerosis.
  • Macro Dosing – This is an intensive CBD treatment and is generally reserved for the worst of inflictions. The dosage ranges from 50 milligrams to 800 milligrams daily. As a general rule macro dosing is reserved for the worst life-altering conditions and has shown to be effective for liver disease, seizures, epilepsy, tumors, and cancer.

What is the Endocannabinoid System?​

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) was discovered in the 1990s, while scientists were analyzing the effects of THC. Whether or not you use marijuana the ECS is present within the body. It gets extremely complicated and experts are unsure of exactly what the ECS controls and effects, but it has been linked to many processes such as appetite, digestion, chronic pain, mood, sleep, stress, inflammation, motor control, metabolism, memory, cardiovascular system function, muscle formation, liver function, reproductive system function, nerve function, skin, bone remodeling, and growth. It is believed the primary function of it is to help to control homeostasis in the body by fine-tuning all of those processes combined. Endocannabinoids are molecules similar to cannabinoids, but are made by your body. There are two main types of endocannabinoid receptors in the body, some are found in the central nervous system and others in the peripheral nervous system. Endocannabinoids then bind to these receptors depending on the body’s needs, whether it be to reduce inflammation or to reduce stress.

CBD and its effects on the ECS

Studies have shown that CBD either binds to the endocannabinoid receptors or prevents other endocannabinoids from breaking down, allowing the naturally produced cannabinoids to be more effective. This means that the ECS has more available compounds to work with, which in turn leads to a better operating system and smoother homeostasis. For example, if the body is fighting a fever, there are more compounds present to bond with the appropriate receptors to boost the immune system while also having enough left over to bind to the other receptors that aid in other processes in the body leading to faster recovery time. While the effects of CBD on the ECS are still new and there are still tons of research to be done preliminary results have been promising in most studies conducted.

Although CBD has not been shown to conclusively give relief in the supposed areas anecdotal evidence has shown that CBD has a profound effect on the people who use it daily. Users have reported relief in many areas of their life ranging from depression and anxiety to pain management and a reduction in inflammation. For many, CBD has had the effect that many users are looking for from marijuana without the “high” they get from THC. This can be a miracle for some as they cherish the overall feeling of wellbeing but do not want to be out of it or they want to maintain a certain job. For some CBD may be a magic bullet but for others, it can be another tool in their arsenal to fight the effects of a negative feeling or experience.

Methods of Consuming CBD​

Once your optimal dosage is found or you have chosen your preferred methodology to start with there are many ways to consume CBD. Each method has its benefits while also having its negative characteristics. It is best to experiment with each and find the best that works for you and your particular ailment.

  • Smoking / Vape Pen -Smoking CBD Flower or vaping CBD can be the fastest acting way to consume CBD. As with vaping the drawback can be that you never really know how much CBD is being used since you are really just guessing by eyeing out the measurement. Topicals can also be really expensive and are probably best left to the occasional treatment of skin conditions or used in addition to other methods.
  • Edibles -These can range from CBD gummies to cookies to capsules and gelcaps. Edibles are considered the easiest and most delicious way to consume CBD. The only disadvantage is the CBD has to pass through the digestive system and can take some time to become effective. This means relief can be 30 minutes to an hour away from the initial point of ingestion. The advantage of edibles though far outweighs the disadvantages. CBD infused products can be easy to find, easy to transport, and especially easy to consume. They also tend to tell you how many milligrams are in each piece so dosing effectively can be a simple as taking one or more throughout the course of a day. Many people have started their adventure with CBD with many of the infused products on the market.
  • Tinctures – With all the hype surrounding other forms of CBD tinctures still tend to be the most popular form of consumption. This is because while tinctures are fast acting, they are also precise with their measurements. The most effective way to administer a tincture is to place it under the tongue and allow it to soak into the bloodstream. This is very effective as it bypasses the digestive system and is usually much faster acting by quickly absorbing into the blood. Tinctures are easily measured out also as drops or eyedroppers will have a milligram associated with them. Tinctures can be perfect for those who are macro dosing since they do not have to consume ten gummies at 10mg or four at 25mg to get to the 100mg mark. Tinctures also tend to come in much higher content than some other forms of CBD offered.

What is the difference between Hemp and Marijuana?
